• Compiling for the Mac

For those who don't know, this BBS is running inside a Debian linux virtual machine in VirtualBox on my Mac Pro.

I started it that way years ago for many reasons: it let me compartmentalize the BBS away from my personal stuff; added another layer of protection against hacks; and SBBS was just much better supported for linux than for Mac.

However lately I've been experimenting with trying to get Synchronet to run directly on my Mac. I really want to the BBS to be faster. I tried using cloud hosting months ago, which worked. But the performance (at the price I could afford) was actually worse than what I have right now. But I feel confident that running directly on my Mac would be faster than inside emulation.

Anyway, after a lot of head-banging, today I finally got Sync to compile on my Mac. That's the first step. Now I need to figure out how to configure it, because some of the linux config options won't work.

This has been a longer post than I intended, but the point is that a Mac version of Guardian of Forever may become reality! If it does, the main thing I'll be looking for is a speed boost with my ANSI projects.

Yes, so many people are realizing that the cloud isn't the answer for everything. It has its place, but it is not a 100% across-the-board solution. Chatty apps will cost you a fortune. Plus, for many people (and even small business) it is far cheaper to just virtualize than deal with monthly costs that can be several hundred or thousands of dollars.

I tried to move my little dev setup from VMs to the cloud about a year ago. After I got the first bill for over $500 I quickly switched back. Even with turning off instances and being as conservative as possible, I was on track to keep spending a minimum of $300 a month and that was for low-performance systems.
