• Billy Mitchell stripped of his records

From Kirkman to All on Thu Apr 12 22:36:50 2018
Some big news for those of you who remember the "King of Kong" documentary:

Twin Galaxies has removed all of Billy Mitchell's Donkey Kong records!

Apparently they concluded that two of three tapes they reviewed could not have been produced by genuine hardware, and were likely performed on MAME or another emulator.

I am having a hard time navigating back to my original post.

But yeah! Billy mitchell crazy, eh? He is attending an arcade convention right now. I think he is at the Midwest Gaming Classic.

Ok, I'm going to try to figure out how to respond to that other reply. Wish me luck.

I never knew much about Billy (or about arcade gaming competitions) prior to King of Kong, but he sure was a compelling character. I know the historian Jason Scott has a lot of issues with film as a documentary. It is apparently misleading in several aspects.

But the fact remains that it was compelling and tons of fun to watch. I will never forget that scene of Steve Wiebe practicing in the garage and yelling back and forth with his little son who wants help wiping his bottom.

As for the new Billy developments, it totally fits with what was happening in the movie. Twin Galaxies kept asking Wiebe to perform in person on verified hardware, while Billy Mitchell's tapes were accepted without the slightest hesitation.

I am certain Mitchell is a great gamer, and probably capable of those scores. But there can be no doubt he was using MAME to make those videos. Whether he cheated/edited beyond that (using save states, etc) isn't clear.
